Drew Smith

Early Years:

  • Born on September 2, 1998 in Livonia, Michigan.
  • Began playing baseball at the age of 5.
  • In 2006, moved to Iowa with his family.
  • In 2012, relocated to Elkhorn, Nebraska.

High School Career (Elkhorn High School – Elkhorn, Neb.):

  • Varsity Baseball Player all four years of high school.
  • Improved batting average every year, peaking at .479 as a senior in 2016.
  • Hit .455 over his final three high school seasons.
  • Accumulated 64 RBIs, 31 doubles, five triples, and nine home runs over 78 games in his last three seasons.
  • Also a successful pitcher, going 4-0 with a 1.35 ERA as a senior.
  • Currently holds records for Career Hits -163, Hits in a Season – 58 (2016) and Career Doubles – 38 (2013-2016).

Wayne Westphal

– Played college baseball at Omaha University (Now UNO)
– Coached at Creighton Prep before he moved to Elkhorn
– Coached the Midget team for Elkhorn Legion Baseball (called the Juniors now) – Head Coach from 1989 – 2000
– Won Juniors State Championships in 1993, 1995, 1998, and 1999
– Volunteered for the Elkhorn High School spring team
– Chairman of the Baseball Committee at American Legion Post #1
– Was in charge of the Collin-Orcutt All Star Game
– Was known by all as “Coach”

2023 Inductees

Coach Jerry Frerichs

Coach Frerichs was the head legion coach for 27 years. Coached in the Elkhorn program across 4 decades and retired from coaching and teaching in Elkhorn in 2009. Coach Frerichs had over 600 Legion Baseball wins as his time as coach including 3 Senior Legion titles in 1988, 1995, and 2000. Elkhorn restarted high school ball in 1991 with Coach Frerichs at the helm.

Coach Frerichs had about 375 wins in the spring including State Championships in 2007 and 2008.  The field in Elkhorn will always be named Jerry Frerichs Field due to the hard work and dedication that Coach Frerichs put into the team and the field named in his honor.

Jason Christiansen

Christiansen was born in Omaha, Nebraska and attended Elkhorn High School. He is an alumnus of Cameron University. He was signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates as an amateur free agent in 1991, Christiansen made his Major League Baseball debut with the Pirates on April 26, 1995.

Jason is the first player in Elkhorn Baseball history to reach the Major Leagues. Pitching for 4 Major League Baseball teams across 11 seasons. Jason pitched over 400 innings in his MLB career. Jason was a left handed pitcher.  Jason played 11 seasons for 4 teams, including the Pirates and Giants. He had 27 wins, 26 losses, an ERA of 4.30 and 384 strikeouts.
